Animal Ark Sanctuary

Recently The Ark took in a little Chihuahua named PJ. PJ was an owner surrender and approximately 3 to 4 years old. It was noted on the owner surrender that PJ had seizures; just how bad, we had no idea.

PJ was placed in a foster home and the seizures soon started. The first week he had two seizures and from there it progressively got worse. There were times when he would have three seizures in one day. PJ was taken to the vet, where he was neutered and had a complete set of bloodwork done. He was placed on potassium bromide once a day.

Three weeks later there had been no change in the pattern of seizures or the amount, so we added another medication to the daily routine. This medication he got three times a day. He also had injectable valium to help bring him out of the seizures more quickly. The valium worked, but the second medication did not. Some of the seizures would
last anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. It was very heartbreaking and scary to watch this little dog go through this.

His foster mom went online and did some research on diet and seizures, and found that diet plays a big role in seizure dogs. So PJ is on a diet of homemade dog food, where every ingredient is organic and natural. PJ loves the food and his coat couldn’t be shiner or softer, but the diet has not made a big difference for him.

PJ went back to the vet this week and is on another new medication, we are hoping that this will be the answer for him.

In the meantime he will remain on the homemade diet and his seizures will be closely monitored.

Please keep in mind that this is the first time PJ has ever been on any type of medication for his seizures, which is very sad, because without medication they progressively got worse. Our biggest fear is that someday he will have a seizure and not come out of it. We will do everything in our power to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Please keep PJ in your thoughts and prayers as we try to get a handle on this whole situation. For now he is getting the best possible care, food that he loves and he is surrounded by people who love and care about him.

Please join us for a bake sale outside Hollywood Pet Salon on Saturday, Oct.29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.. We are trying to raise as much money as we can to help us cross the finish line and have a grand opening in November.

Thank you for your continued support, and as always, thank you for reading our column.
