100 Years Ago – Nov. 1, 1916

Social — The senior class of Houlton High School conducted a masquerade social from which it netted over $30. This will be added to a fund for defraying graduation expenses in 1917.

Loving Cup — The officers of the Second Maine Regiment, recently returned from the Mexican border, presented Col. F. M. Hume of this town with a beautiful loving cup at a banquet tendered him Wednesday night at the Bangor House. Col. Hume has given 23 years of his life to Maine’s military development and has brought the 2nd Regiment to its present high plane of efficiency.

 

75 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1941

Debate — Boston University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology will engage in a radio debate over station WHDH in Boston on Friday evening. Austin P. Freeley Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin P. Freeley of Houlton, will be one of Boston University’s team members. Freeley will take the affirmative on the proposition, “Should the United States Send Aid to Britain?”

New members — The Houlton Music Club met with Mrs. Royal Crockett with a large number in attendance. The president, Mrs. Marjorie Bull, welcomed the following eight new members: Miss Gertrude Kennedy, Miss Doris Kennedy, Miss Katherine Ingalls, Mrs. Idella Estey, Mrs. Rowena Pressey, Mrs. Betty Sawyer, Mrs. Lillian Gormley and Mrs. Marguerite Bither, and presented each with a rose.

 

50 Years Ago – Nov. 2 , 1966

Dedicated— Robinson Mountain in Island Falls was dedicated in the memory of Civil War Private George Foster Robinson in ceremonies Friday. Major General Edwin W. Heywood represented Governor John H. Reed at the dedication. The area named for the town’s Civil War hero is the former May Mountain.

Visit — Howard Foley, Republican candidate for Congress from the Second District, took off his jacket, donned a white apron and received a quick lesson in the art of baking during his visit this past week to the Tingley Baking Company in Houlton. Mr. Foley not only received some excellent instruction, but was the center of attention as he toured the bakery. Phyllis Worthley showed Mr. Foley how to use a rolling pin while Barb Williams, Bonnie Porter, Maureen Sisson and Mabel York looked on.

 

25 Years Ago – Oct. 30, 1991

Ceremony — In honor of the late Fred L. Powers, a dedication ceremony was conducted at the Knights of Columbus Hall. A flagpole erected in his honor was placed in front of the building. Daughter Mary Williamson, sons Dan Powers, Mike Powers and Rellon Powers and Father John Skehan were all there when Mrs. Fred Powers accepted the flag presented to her by Sir Knight Phil Hathaway and Commander Aurelien Chasse. Fred was an active member of the council.

Selected — Jeanette Mooers was selected Shop ‘N Save associate of the month for August. Jeanette is a cashier and has been with the store for 15 years. Her hobbies are gardening and sports.
