PT Hilston CarpenterCARPENTER, Hilston R., 98, Scarborough, Nov. 3, 2016. There will be no funeral service per Hilston’s wishes.

Hilston R. Carpenter, 98, of 21 Spurwink Road, Scarborough, died Thursday November 3rd, 2016 at Scarborough Terrace.

Born in Bloomfield, New Brunswick, Canada, on Feb. 17, 1918, Mr. Carpenter was the older son of Robert and Blanche (Britton) Carpenter.

His early life was spent in Boston, MA and Monticello, ME.

During World War II, he lived and worked in the war effort at Colt’s Patent Firearms in Hartford, CT. In the heart of the depression, he and his family returned to Maine where he founded the Monticello Hardware Co. which he operated successfully for 15 years until 1960. After living a year in Gorham where his wife furthered her education, he and his family returned to The County, where they lived in Monticello while their new home was being built in Houlton. This was their home for the next 25 years.

One year he was Manager of The Northland Hotel in Houlton. Subsequently, he served as an industrial salesman for Bangor Companies for 17 years. He was a 65 year member of Monument Lodge 96, and member of AF and AM Aroostook Chapter No. 20 St. Aldeman Commandery No. 17 and Anah Temple Shrine. He was a former member of B.P.O. Elks No. 835.

In 1984, he and his wife Genevieve moved to Scarborough. He was very dedicated to tending to the needs of his parents, siblings (and his wife) during their long, fatal illnesses. Other than his vast collection of family, friends, and acquaintances throughout the state, he had many interests. He enjoyed the roses and vegetable gardening, carpentry, and golfing, but he was most interested in seeing to the welfare of his son, grandsons, and great-grand-children. He loved all sports and beauties of nature. He was never happier than when he was at Griswold with family or friends canoeing and fishing on the river behind the camp, and/or just walking in the woods. These trips have brought him happiness since they began in the early 1940’s.

His wife of 69 years, Genevieve Porter Carpenter, died in 2005. Surviving is a son Terre and his wife Marilyn (Godsoe) of South Portland; two grandsons Jeff and his wife Brigitte (Blair) of Moultonborough, NH, Dan and his wife Tiffany of Farnum, England; four great-grandchildren Jeff II and his wife Jonann (Petty) of Toronto, Kansas, Blair Carpenter and her partner Dan Popeek of Manchester, NH, Ethan and Emily Carpenter of North Easton, MA; he is also survived by two special friends, James and Diane Brown of Scarborough.

There will be no funeral service per Hilston’s wishes. Final resting place will be Black Point Cemetery with burial being held at a later date. Many thanks to the girls at Scarborough Terrace for his exceptional care for the final five years of his live. May he rest in peace. Arrangements by Affordable Cremation Solution LLC, Auburn.
