Librarian Rebecca Drew gave a talk on the Orphan Train history from the early century. Orphan trains were organized by the Children’s Aid Society of New York from 1858 through the early 20th century. They transported orphaned or homeless children from the streets of New York City to the farmlands of the Midwest.
The children lived with families who chose them for workers on the farms or in the home. Often they were adopted into the family but also, as they grew, many left for other occupations. Several Orphan Train children went on to become prominent citizens of the times. There are several fiction books at the library on this topic as well as non-fiction information.
