100 Years Ago – Dec. 6, 1916
Changes — Mr. Fred W. Fleming (Wild Bill) on Tuesday last assumed the entire management of the Bowlodrome, having purchased the interest of Mr. Niles, who retires. Mr. Fleming is contemplating several changes, the most important will be the installation of three new up-to-date alleys.
The boy wonder — Crowded houses will be the rule at The Dream this week for the return engagement of Master Julien Martin, the Boy Wonder Violinist. Only seven years of age, but his skill in rendering the most difficult classical compositions, as well as all the old popular airs, together with his winsome stage manner, never fails to captivate his hearers and evoke the heartiest applause.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1941
Who’s Who — Miss Mary Callnan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Callnan, a graduate of Houlton High School in 1939 and who will receive her A.B. degree from St. Joseph’s College in Portland in 1943, is among the students selected for listing the 1941-42 issue of ‘Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.’
Visit from St. Nick — The first Christmas party of the season was the Keystone Sunday School class of the United Baptist Church, help Monday evening. Mrs. Ralph Armystrong, Mrs. Alfred Wright, Mrs. Lizzie Webb, Mrs. Beverly Anderson, Mrs. Forest Hartin and Mrs. Ray Daggett were hostesses for the delicious six o’clock supper. The group was the first to be visited here by Santa Claus on his 1941 trip.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 7, 1966
Meeting — A local group of button collectors, known as Button-ups, met recently at the Gentle Memorial Building. Present were Mrs. Benjamin Sweet, Mrs. Leona Flanders, Mrs. Roy Jarvis, Mrs. Arthur Gentle, Miss Cindy Buzza and Miss Mary Bell.
Tour — Mrs. Dorothy Adams, the grade 6 teacher led her group of sixth-grade students, who have been studying in the classroom about telephones and communications, on a tour of the Telephone Company building in Houlton. The girls were particularly interested in the switchboard operation, explained by Miss Edna Cunliffe, chief operator.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1991
60 years — Mr. and Mrs. George Seward recently celebrated their 60th anniversary hosted by friends and relatives with a reception at the VFW Hall in Linneus. They were married Sept. 14,1931, and have three children, 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Rotary Auction — Rotarians, Paul Adams, auctioneer, Bert Magnus, pegger and sorter, and Walter Goodrich, worked at a feverish pace three nights last week recording bids coming in from volunteers managing the phones. Preliminary figure returns are in at $11,300 with proceeds going towards many worthwhile community projects, this year’s goal being the Houlton Children’s Library.
