ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The Island Falls Historical Society’s sixth annual Christmas Cookie Sale was held Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016. After the storms of earlier in the week, it seems folks were eager to be out as there was a very good turnout and sales were rapid.
The cookie sale serves as a fundraiser and is also as an end of year event, wrapping up the exhibits offered by the Society and celebrating the start of the Christmas season in the community. Reneva Smith has served as “Santa’s elf” for us each year and has able help from Mary Fowler.
Members of the Society and community members donate homemade cookies, fudge and sweets and this year the variety was great. Coffee and muffins were served for a social time during the sale.
This year we offered a Christmas jumble table with many items going at donation prices. A door prize of a small Santa wall hanging made and donated by Ava Joy was won by Cecily McKinnon of Patten. The Society wishes to thank all who cooked and helped.
Immediately following the sale, the monthly meeting of the Island Falls Historical Society was held. Although the year has ended, we begin to plan for the next. Food sales are planned in January and February and as 2017 celebrates the 100th anniversary year of the U.S. involvement in World War I we begin to plan exhibits and information times focused on that event.
Our Post Office has some special items for sale this year. In the lobby are small stuffed animals, holiday cards, framed sports cards and of course there are the USPS beautiful seasonal stamps.
A series of burglaries have occurred in the area. It reminds one to be aware and to keep doors secured and money and valuables away from sight. In this day of public social media conversations, it is also wise to not be too public with your comings and goings. As people of small towns, we are unused to locking doors and vehicles and being suspicious of others. It is sad to have to adopt those habits but a sign of the times.
