100 Years Ago – Dec. 20, 1916
Improvements — Geo. R. Avery has been making some improvements on the interior of his store and pool room during the past week. A new and up-to-date pool table has been added, and the whole store has been brightened with paint.
Busy man — The busiest man in town this week is Geo. Fiske, driver of the U. S. Mail, and if you don’t believe it ask George. The heavy receipt of mails now arriving keeps his teams busy and the delayed trains keep him guessing.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 18, 1941
New position — Miss Priscilla Plourde left Monday for Washington, D. C., where she has accepted a secretarial position in the War Department, having passed the Civil Service tests a few months ago. Miss Plourde is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Plourde. She graduated from Houlton High School in June.
Grocery store — The first self-service grocery store in Houlton was placed in operation this week when Grant and Daigle, proprietors of the modern market on upper Military Street, officially started their new system of merchandising. The Self Service Grocery leaves the customer free to roam at will about the store to make his or her own selections from stocks conveniently arranged and displayed.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 21 , 1966
Gifts for children — Members of the Girl Scout Troop 222 made yarn dolls, horses and octopuses to be given to the Salvation Army for distribution to youngsters this Christmas. The girls sold calendars to to raise money so they could buy the materials needed for their project. The leader of the troop, Mrs. Shirley Tidd, along with members Robyn Parsons, Mary Dickinson and Susan Swallow presented the yarn dolls to Salvation Army Captain Clifton Gould.
Winning ticket— Peg Kearney drew the winning ticket from the basket held by Gladys Smith that determined the winner of the doll and homemade wardrobe. The name on the winning ticket was Roger Carroll. The doll and clothes were given by the Madigan Memorial Hospital Alumnae Association as a fund raising project, proceeds going to purchase equipment for the hospital.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 18, 1991
Christmas dinner — The Houlton Lodge of Elks sponsored its annual senior citizens Christmas dinner with turkey and the fixings. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Gravel were among over 200 guests.
Geography Bee — Lambert School held its fourth annual National Geography Bee on Thursday and the winner was Lucus Ritchie with runner-up Ryan Bell. Prizes were presented by Bee master Joe Feeney and Vicki Perry offered up congratulations.
