HOULTON, Maine — A 33-year-old Houlton man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police and fire officials were called to a residence on the Currier Road for a structure fire.
Andrew J. Ames, 33, was arrested by Houlton Police on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court, according to Houlton Police Detective Steve Nason, after police learned Ames was wanted by police. The arrest was unrelated to the fire.
Houlton Fire Chief Milton Cone said the fire, which was reported at 3:05 p.m., was believed to have started inside the garage adjacent to a mobile home on 459 Currier Road that was being rented by Laura Ames. Upon arrival, Houlton firefighters found the garage fully involved.
According to Cone, Ames’ son, Andrew, was moving items in the garage and moved a wood stove that contained ash and hot coals. The stove fell apart, spilling the ash and embers onto the floor.
A total of 18 firefighters responded, with a mutual aid call sent out to Littleton Fire Department for a water tanker. Firefighters were
on the scene until 4:45 p.m. The mobile home sustained minor heat damage to the exterior, while the garage was a total loss.
