100 Years Ago – Dec. 27, 1916

 Candy man— J.A. Millar at his candy factory in three days during Christmas week, with two men doing the work, turning out 6,280 pounds of candy. Some sweet work.

 Retiring — Henry D. Smart, 12 years turnkey at the County jail under Sheriffs Thurlough, Lawlis and Bryson, goes out of office Sunday. Mr. Smart was a fearless, faithful official and always on his job. During his administration callers always received courteous attention, and prisoners always spoke highly of the treatment he accorded them.

 

75 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1941

 Can drive — More than 500 pieces of canned goods were received at the Houlton Theatre Saturday morning at a special canned goods matinee. The manager, Francis J. Gooch, arranged the party and the articles received were donated to the Salvation Army to assist in its Christmas work.

 Wins contest — Robert Miller, 17 month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Miller of Monticello, was winner of the first prize of five dollars in the Attractive Child Photo Contest conducted by the Porter Studio.

 

50 Years Ago – Dec. 28 , 1966

 Contest winners — Winners of the annual Christmas home decorating contest sponsored by the Retail Trade Board of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce have
been announced as follows: Harry Baulch, Percy Campbell, Clayton Currie, Tom Ewing and Mrs. Kathleen. Honable mention went to Robert Hurley, Mrs. Doris Moody and Dr. Edward P. Williams.

 Retire — Miss Helen Esters, the first person to avail herself of the retirement plan sponsored by the First National Bank of Houlton, was guest of honor at a party at the bank. Miss Esters, an employee of the bank since October of 1926, will retire as of the year end.

 

25 Years Ago – Dec. 25, 1991

 Spirit of giving — Matti Watson is a retired senior volunteer who lives at Ricker Plaza in Houlton. She is 89 and has been widowed for 52 years. Mattie knits and knits beautifully. Her latest project involves knitting mittens for preschoolers at Moosebrook Headstart on the Ludlow Road.

 Trauma bears — Marie Winfield, satellite branch manager for Key Bank in the Houlton Shopping
Plaza, Spinney and Jim O’Mara, manager of the downtown Key Bank branch were on hand at Houlton
Region Hospital Dec. 11 to present Terry Spinner, emergency room nurse manager at the hospital, with
trauma bears.
