Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day with no school for students in Maine, but that does not mean a day off from basketball. Eight games are slated for the day, starting as early as 1 p.m. and continuing through to the traditional 7 p.m. start times.

The following is the boys schedule of games for Monday: East Grand is at Wisdom, 2:30 p.m.; Bangor Christian visits Katahdin, 6:30 p.m.; Central is at Houlton, 7 p.m.; and Easton visits Hodgdon, 7 p.m.

For the girls, East Grand plays at Wisdom, 1 p.m.; Easton is at Hodgdon, 2:30 p.m.; Central at Houlton, 4 p.m.; Bangor Christian is at Katahdin, 5 p.m.; and Fort Fairfield is at Southern Aroostook, 6 p.m.

Boys’ results from Friday were:

Penquis 54, Katahdin 45 — At Stacyville. Katahdin led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, but a 25-8 second quarter surge by Penquis resulted in a 31-17 shift at the half. Penquis led 39-29 after three quarters.

Katahdin’s Hunter Craig poured in 18 points to lead all players, while John McNally chipped in 16 for the Cougars (1-9). Charles Artus led the Patriots (3-4) with 14 points while Colin Beckett netted 11 and Clayton Preble 10.

The following is a recap of boys games played Saturday.

Limestone-MSSM 31, East Grand 28 — At Danforth Saturday, the Vikings played an evenly matched game with visiting Limestone-MSSM. East Grand (1-10) had a chance to tie the game with seconds remaining, but the shot was off the mark. The two teams split on the season.

Philip Farley led East Grand with 13 points, while Brady McEwen chipped in seven and Josh Jones and Landin Stoddard each had four.

For the Eagles (3-6), Mason Patten had nine points; Matt Martin chipped in eight; Travis Hatfield added six; Trevor Hale and Victory Negron both had three; and Alex Sprague added two.

The two teams were tied 7-7 to end the first quarter, but East Grand led 16-15 at the half. The game was knotted at 25-25 after three stanzas.

Houlton 59, Ellsworth 64 (OT) — At Ellsworth Saturday, the Shires saw a 22-point first-half lead evaporate in the second half as the Eagles tied the game in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime. Houlton held Ellsworth scoreless in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead and was up 22-12 at halftime and 41-22 after three quarters.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Shires (5-3). Houlton was led by Cameron Graham’s 20 points, while Jared Fox and Keegan Gentle chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively.

The Eagles (6-4) were led by Bryce Harmon’s 25-point effort. Zach Harris added 14 points and Jared Hamilton had 10.

In girls’ basketball action Saturday, results were:

Limestone-MSSM 27, East Grand 70 — At Danforth, Sarah Stoddard poured in 30 points, while Hayleigh Shay added 23 and Jordyn Cowger chipped in nine as the Vikings (6-4) dominated Limestone-MSSM.

Stephanie Bragg paced Limestone-MSSM with 12 points. The Eagles are now 2-8 on the year.

 

Houlton 70, Ellsworth 38 — At Ellsworth, a third-quarter surge sparked Houlton to the lopsided win over Ellsworth. The Shires (9-0) led 12-7 in the first quarter and 21-17 at halftime before breaking open the game in the second half.

Rylee Warman drained five 3-pointers, on her way to a game-high 21 points, while Kolleen Bouchard added 18 (all in the second half) and Aspen Flewelling chipped in 12.

Sammy Mason led Ellsworth (4-7) with 13 points, while Kaitlin Bagley and Kacie Omlor added 10 and 9, respectively.

In hockey action, the Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin Black Hawks fell 10-1 to Orono-Old Town in a game played at the Alfond Arena in Orono. Josh Malone scored the lone goal for the Black Hawks (6-4).

Nate Lilley and Ian Neureuther combined for 37 saves for the Black Hawks.

For Orono-Old Town (8-0-1) Ben Allen-Rahill recorded a hat trick and assisted on another goal.

Tyler McCannell added two goals and two assists while Jacob Dubay, Austin Sheehan and Jacob Gallon each had a goal and two assists. Nick Boutin chipped in with a goal and an assist and Dillon Leland had a goal. Cam Tower had two assists while Tyler Wheeler, Josh Wheeler, Trent Lick, Dylan Street and Jonah Edgar all had one assist.

Goalie Brendan Gassaway had 18 saves on 19 shots.
