100 Years Ago – Jan. 17, 1917
Picture — There has recently been hung in the reading room of the Cary Library a beautiful oil painting of the late Dr. Geo. Cary, the man who made Houlton’s beautiful library possible.
It is fitting that the picture of Houlton’s benefactor and public spirited citizen should hang on the walls of the library he created, and his friends and former associates are pleased that so true a likeness of Dr. Cary has been secured.
Updates — A representative of the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company was in town last week and closed a contract with Mr. Fleming of the Bolodrome for two new and up-to-date bowling alleys, which will be installed at an early date.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 15, 1942
Top award — Francis J. Gooch, manager of the Houlton Theatre, captured first honors in the recent Y. Frank Freeman Drive in competition with the 24 M&P Theatres in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The victory is a real achievement when it is realized that with one exception, the other theatres in the competition are located in cities of larger sizes than Houlton.
Lunch fund — The fifth annual Children’s Hour, in which the students of the local schools present a musical program, will be held at the high school auditorium Thursday evening Jan. 22, under the sponsorship of the Houlton Woman’s Club. The program is to benefit the Hot Lunch Fund Benefit.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 18 , 1967
Elected — Herschel K. McIntosh of Houlton was elected and installed Potentate of Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor Friday. He is the second resident of Houlton to be elected to this high office. Percy H. Campbell was the first.
Award — Miss Virginia Peltier, a senior at Houlton High School, received a Tree Farm award at the Eastern Maine Forest Forum in Bangor Jan. 9. Paul Patterson of Bangor, chairman of the Maine Tree Farm Committee, presented the award. Miss Peltier received a certificate accepting her 100-acre farm in Ludlow into the Maine Tree Farm Program.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 15, 1992
Pledge — Mary Hatfield, treasurer of the Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary, presented Bradley C. Bean, Houlton Regional Hospital administrator, with a $9,900 check to cover an auxiliary pledge on the hospital’s mammogram equipment for 1991.
Hug a bear — The Cub Scouts of Den 3 delivered a Christmas present to the Houlton Ambulance Service on Dec. 27 after learning that the Hug-A-Bear Program was low on bears. Scouts who participated in the program were Andrew Hemingway, Matthew London, Cameron McNutt, Mike McNutt, Dan Stewart, Dave Stewart and Tabor Young.
