Editor’s Note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Memorial Library in Houlton highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by the staff.

We have just finished reading two endearing children’s books: “Before Morning,” by Dewberry winner Joyce Sidman, and “A Hat for Mrs. Goldman,” by Michelle Edwards.

The exquisite scratch art in “Before…” is contemporary and detailed by Beth Krommes, a Caldecott medalist. It follows the line of the story so well, we’ll be betting the little readers can tell the tale after just one or two readings.

A small child does often feel alone when a parent works long days and hours away from home at sea, in aviation, the military, etc. And though our winters haven’t been as calm lately as in this book, sometimes the silent snow does fall and close down the rushing world around us. Watch for the cupcakes or muffins or snow angels.

“…Mrs. Goldman” knits and teaches knitting, and explains keppies, love and mitzvah to Sophie. Sophie notices Mrs. Goldman has no hat, although over many years she has made hats for dozens of people, large and small.

Sophie finds knitting hard and tedious, although she remains steady at the task when she would rather be making pom-poms. The finished product is not the least to Sophia’s liking — holes and bumps abound. Then inspiration strikes! You might guess Sophie covered the mistakes with — patches? ribbons? just what?

Mrs. Goldman is so happy with her warm hat and says it reminds her of roses.

Both books this week have the positive message that all children can learn to make our lives better. Enjoy and share!
