Local Red Cross urges to prepare for flooding

    CARIBOU – The American Red Cross Aroostook County office of the Pine Tree Chapter encourages people in northern Maine to prepare now for potential spring flooding.    “It’s important to be aware of flood risks in your community,” said Mike Brown, Red Cross Disaster Services Coordinator. “Families and individuals should be keeping informed about the weather through TV, radio, the local Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross. With warming temperatures and the possibility of rain, on top of the deep snow pack, everyone needs to be alert to the possibilities of flooding.”
    The Pine Tree Chapter recommends that people reduce potential flood damage at home by raising furnaces, hot water heaters, furniture, valuables, and electric panels in areas of the house that might be at risk for flooding. The Red Cross also recommends that every household have a family disaster plan and a disaster supply kit on hand in case of rising water or any other potential disasters.
    “Families can talk about their disaster plan over dinner,” Brown said. “A few minutes of conversation can provide a lot of comfort before any potential emergency, and empowerment in case something happens.” He added that “It’s easy to put together a disaster supply kit with clothing, water, food, important documents, flashlights, a portable radio, medications, pet supplies, and batteries.”
    According to the Pine Tree Chapter’s Aroostook County Branch, floods can take days to develop, but flash floods can also occur with hours or minutes of any warning.
