Fort Fairfield to hold annual golf scramble

This year’s 11th annual Memorial Day Golf Scramble will be held in memory of Fort Fairfield native Peter G. Hunt, Sr. who passed away unexpectedly on June 28th at the age of 63.  A founder of the statewide United Insurance Group, Hunt established and successfully operated a number of businesses in the County and beyond, including acquiring in recent years the Harry’s family of businesses Top of Maine Insurance Co., Harry’s Honda and Harry’s Motor Sports in Presque Isle.
Hunt was also involved in several other community and civic organizations. He was a member of the NMCC Foundation Board of Directors, Aroostook Partnership for Progress, Community General Hospital in Fort Fairfield, Fort Fairfield Housing Authority and the Fort Fairfield Community Development Board. He was also an avid supporter of athletics.
The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 24th at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield.
This will be a four person scramble with a noon shotgun start. Registration will be from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. The field is limited to the first 40 teams. Entry fee is $50 per person and includes a steak or chicken BBQ dinner.
There will be a men’s division, women’s division and a mixed division (2 men/2 women). Over $5000 in prizes will be awarded to the top 10 net teams and top four gross teams. In addition, golfers will have a chance to win a 2008 Honda supplied by Harry’s Honda for a hole-in-one. In the 10-year history of the event, two cars have been won. Closest to the pin, longest drive and other contests will also be held. A special presentation will be made to the Hunt family at the awards ceremony.
The proceeds of the tournament will go to the Fort Fairfield Athletic Boosters Club in their continued support of athletics at Fort Fairfield Middle/High School.
“This tournament has really grown since our first one,” stated Booster Club president Larry Gardner. “The field fills up quickly because it is such a great event. All of our sponsors really do a great job for us in donating money and prizes, which help make this such a popular event. We want to especially thank Patriot Insurance Company for their Corporate Sponsorship again this year. We hope everyone that plays golf will get a chance to participate in this event. I know that everyone will have a great time”.
