Local police are investigating a number of thefts that have occurred in the area in recent months.
From businesses and farms to personal property, property has been reported from a variety of locations from Fort Fairfield to Washburn. “We had some aluminum taken this summer,” said Chief Joe Bubar, of the Fort Fairfield Police Department.
Aluminum wasn’t the only thing reported stolen in Fort Fairfield.
“Local farmers have been hit. We had a period where farmers were reporting about once a week someone was cutting electrical cords off motors,” said Bubar.
It may not sound like an expensive item, but Bubar said because they’re heavier gauge cords, the cost to replace can get expensive.
“They’re probably $100 or more to replace. They’re heavy cords,” said Bubar, noting the department is continuing its investigations.
Washburn is another community where metal theft has been reported in recent weeks.
“The Washburn Police Department is investigating a local case involving the theft of copper,” said Chief Doug Conroy, of the WPD.
Conroy was unable to give specifics, indicating he didn’t want to give release too many details since the case remains under investigation.
“Guys are getting salvage prices for the stolen materials, but the real cost is to the property owners,” said Conroy. “To replace the stolen materials can cost a fortune.”
Presque Isle police have also received complaints of metal and wire thefts from area farmers. In addition, several thefts of property from parked vehicles has been reported of late, with police investigations continuing. Items taken include stereo equipment, music CDs and money.
Police advise owners to secure their property; lock vehicles; remove items whenever possible; and secure property in a glove box, trunk or garage if one is accessible. Parking in a lit location can also help deter thieves.
