The Caribou and Limestone After School program will be sponsoring a ‘Lights On After School’ rally Thursday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Caribou Learning Center. The rally, in support of after school programs, will celebrated the tenth anniversary of the creation of the 21st Center Community Learning Centers initiative, the principal funding stream for federal support of the after school programs.
This rally will be one of more than 7,500 such events taking place around the nation on the same day, and is the 9th annual Lights on After School celebration, organized by the After School Alliance. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is chair of this program again this year.
Gov. Schwarzenegger is calling for expanding after school opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one and he is also encouraging legislators to continue their support for funding this educational program, instead of cutting or freezing funds.
Caribou and Limestone after school students and their families will be participating in a program at the Caribou Learning Center . Lou Willey, director of the 21st Century Learning After School program for Caribou and Limestone students stated, “ We will have stations set up so families will see and participate in the activities our students experience in our program. We will conclude the evening with a spaghetti supper.”
Willey said Rep. Peter Edgecomb would be present at the rally, offering words of encouragement to local students and she also extends an invitation to members of both the Limestone and Caribou School boards of education to attend the Lights on After School celebration.
