Caribou hoop teams open with victories at Bucksport

    The Viking boys were paced by junior Cameron Anderson, who netted a game-high 24 points en route to the 55-42 triumph. Caribou started strong, opening a nine-point lead after eight minutes of play.
    However, the Bucks battled back and were within one point entering the final period. The Vikes then outscored their opponents by a 19-7 margin in the fourth quarter to take their debut.
    Phil St. Peter tossed in nine points while Eric Brown and Sam Robertson totalled six each for the winners.
    Jon Goodin’s 13 points led the way for Bucksport.
    In the girls game, Caribou held the Bucks to 10 points combined in the second and third quarters en route to a 42-27 victory.
    Amanda Cyr scored 11 points, Jenna Selander notched 10 and Kristen Espling contributed eight for Caribou, which took the lead for good in the second quarter.
    Morgan Sanborn had 15 points to pace Bucksport.
    In other basketball action, the Limestone/MSSM girls dropped their first two contests, losing to Madawaska Friday, 46-21, and to Southern Aroostook Monday, 49-28. Kellie Peers had nine points to lead the Lady Eagles against Madawaska, while Stacy Bernier had 12 for Limestone/MSSM against SA.
    The Eagle boys lost at home to Fort Kent Friday to open its regular season. Matt Harvey and Jason Lesaldo scored 21 points each in the Warriors’ 60-26 win. Chris Parent had seven points for Limestone/MSSM.
    The Washburn boys were beaten by Easton Friday, 47-41, in a game that was tied at halftime. Brad Trask scored 17 points for the Bears, while Nick McIntosh had 13 to key the Beavers’ attack.
    The Washburn girls lost to Southern Aroostook in Dyer Brook Saturday, 63-39. Lauren McGary had a huge game for the winners, totalling 23 points and 10 rebounds. Rebecca Campbell’s 20 points were tops for Washburn. Meghan Saucier was also in double figures with 10 points.
    The Fort Fairfield girls improved their record to 2-0, following up their victory on Saturday over Central Aroostook with a 52-40 home win over Madawaska Monday. Amanda Hotham and Brooke Beaulieu were the leading scorers for Fort Fairfield against the visiting Owls with 16 points each.
    Kallie Pelletier had a team-high 15 for Madawaska.
    On Saturday, the Caribou wrestling team hosted Mount Desert Island, Washington Academy and Geroge Stevens Academy in a four team tournament.
    This was the first meet of the season, and Caribou came away 2-1, with a 60-18 win against WA, a 54-24 victory over GSA, and a struggling 48-36 loss over MDI. Weighing in at 112, Jason Carr had 3 wins for the Vikings, with two forfeits and an initial pin over Chianti Mrazik (WA). Brian Vrieze contributed to the team with a pin over Storme Macomber (GSA) and two forfeits as well at 119. And at 285, Andrew Adams came away with three wins due to forfeits and a final pin over Jon Wood (MDI).         Caribou met again last night in Madawaska, and will head to Howland to compete against Penobscot Valley High School, Calais and John Bapst on Saturday, Dec. 13.
