Waterville – Pauline Gahagan Buxton, 96, of Waterville, died Saturday, March 22, 2009 at a local healthcare facility. Born in Caribou, Me, May 19, 1912, she was the daughter of John F. and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Gahagan.
Pauline graduated from Caribou High School in 1929. She was married to Dr. Almon W. Buxton, July 1, 1943 at the Fort Williams Army Base. She was an early supporter of equality for women in the work force. She was the office manager at JC Penny’s in Waterville for many years along with working in her husband’s medical office. She loved her family and spending time at their camp on Salmon Lake. For many years she hosted Thanksgiving at her house for the entire family. She stayed active in her community over the years through volunteering and supporting organizations.
Pauline was past President of the Rosary Sodality in Waterville, active in the BPW “Business Professional Woman’s” Club where she was an officer, active in the Waterville Gardening Club and the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital auxiliary, volunteered for the Cerebral Palsy Club where she served on the Blue Ribbon Commission, volunteered at the Salvation Army as their bookkeeper, volunteered
at the Muskee Center, chaperoned for teen dances at the YMCA, and was a Girl Scout leader when her daughter was young. She started the first special education CCD class at Sacred Heart Parish which served children with a variety of disabilities. She also founded the junior volunteers for the Waterville Osteopathic Hospital and was instrumental in creating and supervising the memorial program there. She was also involved with creating the Chapel at the hospital.
She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Amy Buxton of Falmouth, one son, Michael Buxton of Waterville, four grandchildren, Brendan M. Buxton of Kinston, NH, James L. Buxton of Mechanic Falls, Melissa A. Buxton of Waterville, and Nicholas N. Buxton of Waterville, 4 Great Grandchildren, Freya Buxton of Kinston, NH, Jace Huard of Waterville, Jenna Rodrigue of Waterville, and Jayden Gagne of Waterville, one sister, Iva Deveau of Caribou, one sister-in-law, Ann Wallace Buxton of Vienna, VA along with many nieces and nephews.
Pauline was predeceased by her husband in 1990, her parents, and 7 siblings, Evangeline Russell, Ruth, Arnold, Albert, Jack, and Doris Bouchard, and Eva Burr.
The Buxton family would like to thank the staff and friends of Oak Grove Nursing home for their kind and compassionate care of Pauline as well as Beacon Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Waterville Humane Society or Inland Hospital.
