At the Monday evening Caribou City Council meeting Steve Buck, city manger, announced that the official ground-breaking ceremony for the long anticipated Caribou connector route will tentatively take place on Monday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. The ceremony is to be held on top of the hill, via the field access road off of Route 161. Other details will be announced as received.
During the Oct. 11 meeting the council authorized the following agenda items.
• Approved a proclamation declaring November as National Adoption Month in the city of Caribou.
• Approved a transportation enhancement project agreement with Maine Dot for the construction of a sidewalk on North Main Street. This project would include the construction of a sidewalk beginning at the top of the hill near the airport on North Main Street to the Route 1 round-a-bout in front of Cary Medical Center at which point it would continue across to the north bound lane, follow along the driveway to the medical center, ending at the entrance of the emergency room. Buck informed the panel the cost of the project was to be split 80/20 percent with the MDOT with the city’s 20 percent involving the cost of labor and use of the city’s equipment.
• Considered making future appointment to the Capital Improvements Committee (5); these appointments will be addressed at the next regular council meeting.
• The council members reviewed a Phase II draft environmental site assessment for 83 Glenn Street. Buck informed that the results of environmental studies have proven that this area, which at one time was the location of the former city garage and maintenance building, “was not the sleeping giant, as we might have thought.” To date, the city is waiting for the DEP to sign off on the property.
• Approved setting the opening time for polls for the Nov. 2 elections at 8 a.m.
• Approved appointing Jayne R. Farrin as election warden and Kalen Hill as deputy election warden for the Nov. 2 elections.
• Approved the issuance of a Texas Hold’Em game of chance license to the American Legion Post 15 for Nov. 6.
• Approved the issuance of the renewal of a special entertainment license for the American Legion Post 15.
In other business Buck discussed a review of communications to Congressional officers pursuant to pending Medicare retroactive payments due to the city from Jan. through June 30 of this year. He also addressed a review of communications from Eaton Peabody pertaining to the Hows Corner Plymouth waste oil site and pending FAME actions.
The city manager also reminded the council of the Ordinance to Regulate Medical Marijuana Dispensaries public hearing set for Monday, Oct. 25.
The group entered into executive session for the purpose of receiving pending economic development considerations.
The next meeting of the Caribou City Council will be held on Monday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers on High Street.
