To the editor:
Remember the late Maine Yankee Nuclear power station in Wiscasset? After an early demise, the plant was dismantled, leaving behind a huge pile of spent fuel rods.
The storage facility for this highly radioactive waste must be “maintained” at a yearly cost of $6.5 million. Maine Public Service Co., owner of 5 percent of the dead nuke, forks over $320,000 per year for its share of the costs.
At this rate, the price tag for the next 35 years of “maintenance” will equal the original cost of building the plant — $220 million.
So much for “cheap, safe, reliable” nuclear energy.
