The Caribou Branch of AAUW will be sponsoring a silent auction at the Caribou Public Library beginning Monday, February 14 through February 28. Photos and descriptions of the auction items will be on display and assigned numbers will insure that bids are confidential.
The proceeds from the auction will go to the Lucinda (Cindy) Hebert Memorial Book Grant Fund. The award is a one-time grant of $500 given to a non-traditional student enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university within Aroostook County. The grant aims to support women who, after having been in the workforce, at home raising families or otherwise away from pursuing education after high school, choose to return to this pursuit. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need, commitment to their futures and excellent potential.
The Book Grant honors long-time AAUW member and former branch president, Lucinda ‘Cindy’ Hebert, who returned to college in her 50’s and graduated at the top of her class from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She was a role model and tireless advocate for the advancement of women through education, as well as civic engagement. Hebert was also a former mayor of Caribou.
The members of AAUW’s Caribou Branch consider this Book Grant Fund a fitting tribute to a good friend. Suzanne Senechal-Jandreau, branch co-president, said, “We hope that people will come to the library early and often to join in the fun and bid on these great items donated by members and their families. We hope to continue Cindy’s legacy of encouraging women to improve their lives through education.”
Items for auction include a weekend at a cottage at Hancock Point; an afternoon of sailing on Long Lake; homemade pies and fudge; gift certificate to Eureka Hall; an original watercolor painting by local artist Marty Gallant; a week at a camp on Cross Lake; subscription to Echoes magazine; a commemorative Ruger pistol; massage with a licensed massage therapist and many other items.
