LIMESTONE — Charles Kenneth Shelby, 57, passed away January 25, at a Bangor Hospital. Charles was born on January 9, 1954, at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands, the last child born to loving parents, Melridge and Josephine Shelby, who devoted much of his adult life to their care. As his parents aged and needed more constant care, their son was there for them.
Charlie was a son, a father, a brother, and a friend. Charles was the father of two wonderful daughters. These young ladies were a great source of pride for him, as he would often remark that in his life he had made many mistakes, but that his daughters were his “something right”.
Charles’s six siblings feel blessed to have had him in their lives. He was a quiet, reflective athlete, who after graduation from Limestone High School, was sought by almost every branch of the armed services for both his athletic and academic prowess. Though medical trials late in his adult years became a way of life for Charles, those who knew him best, realized that he never lost his joy of inquiry and discovery. He may have lost his legs, but he never lost his heart.
If Charlie called you friend, you knew that he was there for you always. No task was too great or too mediocre for him to tackle. His sense of loyalty to friends and family is his greatest legacy. Charles Kenneth Shelby will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Limestone United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 11:30 a.m., Pastor Ellen Cleaves officiating. There will be a private interment in the spring. Arrangements are in care of Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover Street in Caribou.
