The Stockholm American Legion Post Home was all, ‘Nar’lins’, the menu was pure Cajun, the tables decorated with masks, beads and feathers and some dinner guests came dressed for the event when the Stockholm American Legion Auxiliary sponsored Mardi Gras at the Post Home on Saturday, Feb. 26.

BS-MardiGras-CLR-dc2-AR-10Eddie Theriault and Nancy Morneau of Caribou were dressed to the ‘nines’ as they celebrated Mardi Gras at the Stockholm American Legion.

Mardi Gras-goers dined on corn bread, red beans and rice, jambalaya, Cajun popcorn, an appetizer of ‘gougeres,’ a delicate, miniature cheese puffs; pecan pie and of course, the “King’s Cake.

Each table featured a King’s Cake, a circular bread-like delicacy combining the  delicious  tastes of cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon zest.  The tradition behind the King’s Cake  is that inside the cake is a ‘baby’ and the first man and woman who discover the ‘baby’ in their slice  become the King and Queen of Mardi Gras.

Following true to the tradition,  Marilyn Thibodeau, a native of Stockholm, who currently resides in Connor and Eddie Theriault were named the royalty of the Stockholm Mardi Gras. Also keeping with the tradition, the king and queen were paraded amongst the other guests who stood and bowed as they past by.

The evening also featured a guest appearance by “Momma and Eunice,” favorites on the former Carol Burnette Show. Real life mother and daughter, Joyce Akerson and Connie Akerson Bondeson reversed their roles during a brief skit with Bondeson playing the role of Momma with Akerson as Eunice.

As the Mardi Gras event continued members of the local line-dancing group, Steppin’ time provided a quick lesson in line dancing.
