Willey tapped for MEA position

Lou Willey, a former RSU 39 teacher is the new UniServ director for northern region of the Maine Education Association.

Willey was recently named to the position of UniServ director for the northern region of the Maine Education Association.

Willey, the director of the 21st Century After School Program from 2008-11, most recently served as president and chief negotiater for the former Caribou Teacher’s Association and the new Eastern Aroostook Education Association (EAEE).

“I have known Lou since 1973,” said Caribou High School faculty member Kenneth Atcheson, “she is the consummate educator, a dedicated parent and concerned citizen. In her new role, she will be a credit to the Maine Education Association, as she has been to her family, her community and the profession of education.”

As UniServ director for the northern region, Willey will work with educators and be involved with central bargaining and in support of teacher rights and concerns.  

Willey holds masters of educational leadership from the University of Southern Maine and earned a bachelor of science in elementary education at the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1977.  A 1973 graduate of Caribou High School she began her teaching profession in 1989 as a kindergarten and grade-two teacher at Hilltop Elementary, where she continued as a staff member through 2008.

In recognition of her new position, members of the Eastern Aroostook Education Association (Caribou, Limestone and Stockholm) recently presented Willey with a gift of thanks, wishing her well in her new venture.

Officers of the EAEA include: Beth Boone president; Barbara Finlay, vice president; Denise Bosse, secretary; Gayle Smart, grievance chairperson; Kenneth Atcheson, treasurer.
