Vikings in action in three meets

The Caribou ski team has had a busy two-week stretch, having competed in four events during that time, Two others, scheduled for Thursday at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle and Monday in Fort Kent, were cancelled.

The Vikings were the hosts of a classical-style meet, held Jan. 8 at Caribou High School. The race, which was 3.5-kilometers in length, saw both Caribou teams come out on top.

Six Viking girls were among the top-10 finishers. Sarah Doak was second in 14 minutes, eight seconds. Ashley Richards took fourth in 14:49, followed by Chelsea Bard in fifth in 15:11 and Anna Soderberg in sixth in 15:15.

Ginger Kieffer took eighth in 16:42 and Lauren Chapman made it into the top 10 in 17:15.

Caribou scored 10 points, followed by Fort Kent with 37, Presque Isle with 49 and Fort Fairfield with 61.

Kieffer placed seventh in the event, which included skiers from Fort Kent, Central Aroostook, Presque Isle, Lee Academy, Orono, Foxcroft Academy, Greenville, Wisdom, Madawaska, Mattanawcook Academy, Houlton and John Bapst.

The Viking boys had four skiers in the top 10, led by Brendan Cyr in fourth overall in 12:02. Keith Draper took sixth in 12:12 and Ron Lund was seventh in 12:30. Michael Marquis came in ninth place with a 12:55 clocking.

The Vikes posted 22 points, followed by Fort Kent with 38, Presque Isle with 42 and Madawaska with 57.

At Fort Fairfield last Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Caribou girls were again easy winners and the boys finished a close second to the Warriors in the 5K freestyle race.

The trio of Richards, Doak and Bard grabbed the third, fourth and fifth positions. Richards crossed the line in 17:08.5, Doak in 17:12.8 and Bard in 18:05.2.

Caribou scored 11 points, with FK next with 28. Presque Isle (56) and Fort Fairfield (61) followed.

Cyr again led the Viking boys, placing third in 14:13.6. Riley McDuffie was seventh in 15:57.4, Caleb Willett eighth in 16:01.3 and Marquis ninth in 16:21.1 as Caribou notched 23 points, just four behind the winning Fort Kent squad. Presque Isle took third with 42.

At Bigrock Jan. 19, top-10 efforts in the slalom event were turned in by Kieffer (seventh in morning race) and Riley McDuffie (seventh in morning) Dean Walker (ninth in afternoon) and Sean Barbosa (10th in afternoon).
