To the editor:
Last week Rep. Tyler Clark wrote a letter to the editor entitled: “The Rest of the State Budget Story,” which was in response to another letter.
Rep. Clark complained that Mr. Maynard’s letter had Democratic Party talking points in it. Rep. Clark then proceeded to offer us some Republican Party talking points. He stated that Republicans had “cut waste and reduced spending at the state level.” What precisely is the waste you speak of, Mr. Clark? Services to the poor? Public employee pensions? The budgets of our town governments?
Rep. Clark’s letter implies that his agenda for Augusta is to restore fiscal responsibility to the state, and yet he decided to vote for tax cuts that increase deficits. He offers income tax relief that transfers $300 million to Maine’s wealthiest residents.
Republicans in the legislature say they want to help businesses, and yet Rep. Clark and many of his colleagues voted for a health care bill that has raised health care rates for small business owners in rural areas. How precisely are you helping Maine’s economy, Mr. Clark?
I want to keep this letter short, as I have a busy schedule. One might assume our state representatives have more pressing matters to attend to than to attack a citizen’s letter to the editor, as well.
