City manager should tighten belt too

To the editor:
On June 17, Caribou City Manager Austin Bleess presented a list of proposed budget cuts to the City Council. While this proposal asked for the various departments to tighten their belts, suggesting reduced hours, reduction of services, and eliminated positions, Bleess’ own salary was curiously left outside of the realm of debate in relation to the budget.

It is notable that none of Bleess’ predecessors employed a full-time assistant as he does. Despite this luxury, though, the city manager’s pay has remained constant.
During the City Council meeting, Councilman Kouhoupt suggested that the city manager voluntarily forfeit a small portion of his pay, a proposal which was met with conspicuous silence. If the city manager is serious about budget cuts and collective sacrifice, he should look into the mirror.
