To the editor:
Over the past few weeks some great things have been happening in Caribou. The development of a new effort to revitalize Downtown, Sweden Street Thursdays, and this past Saturday public input on the city’s new Comprehensive Plan.
Once again I am inspired by the “true grit” of the Caribou community. I have now worked in Caribou for more than 34 years. While I no longer live in the city, I have family who do and I really believe in this community. We have taken some big blows over the years — the closing of Loring AFB, the exit of ATX, and the list goes on. Many of us were worried about what would or will happen to our community. But time and time again when we face tough times the community rallies. We are doing so again.
We have a great opportunity. You can feel the energy! New people are generating new ideas. In spite of the poor weather crowds turned out for the first Sweden Street Thursday and it was a typical Caribou event, for the entire family. Students raised money for a cheerleading camp, young children enjoyed an inflatable obstacle course, teens and some of us “young at heart” folks enjoyed some good music and food, and people just got together. That is one of the traditions of Caribou, a sense of “community.”
Now is the time to capture this moment and build on it. There are many ways to get involved. Join the downtown revitalization committee, call the city office for times and locations, turn out for the next Sweden Street Thursday on July 11th, participate in the development of the comprehensive plan, or just get involved anyway you can.
Caribou is on the move, let’s keep it going.
