To the editor:
I am a Senior Girl Scout in Troop 1092 in Caribou and I am working on completing my Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award a Girl Scout can earn. I have completed my Bronze and Silver Awards as well. Earning the Gold Award will be my biggest accomplishment as a Girl Scout.
My Gold Award Project is called ‘A Garden for the Community.’ I have built three raised vegetable garden boxes for the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen, the local soup kitchen in Caribou. In addition, I have pots that can be brought indoors for winter gardening, that way the project can continue year round and will remain sustainable so this project can continue for years to come. Sustainability is a major requirement for the Gold Award. I have planted in the boxes and pots some tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, carrots, green beans, parsley, basil, bell peppers, chives and turnips.
When I was searching for supplies for my project, I was shocked at the generosity of the businesses I went to. S.W. Collins, Walmart, and Phil’s Florist either donated or greatly reduced the prices of the items I needed for my project, which will allow me to do more for the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen. When this project is complete, I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I helped the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen feed members of our community.
