Caribou junior Dayne Savage chips the ball onto the green during Thursday’s Penobscot Valley Conference golf championship, held at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln. Savage shot an 87 to qualify for the state tournament, to be held Oct. 19 at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.

LINCOLN — The Caribou Vikings fell short of qualifying as a team for the golf state championship tournament, but two team members still earned the right to compete in the individual tourney Oct. 19.
Caribou had a score of 384 and was eight strokes away from placing among the top three and making it into the States.

The qualifier was held at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships, which took place Thursday at JaTo Highlands.
Viking junior Dayne Savage shot an 87 to make the cut by three strokes. He was eliminated in a playoff at last year’s event.
Savage also played rounds at JaTo the previous two days and shot better on those occasions. Still, his coach (and father), Shawn Savage, said although he wasn’t as sharp Thursday, he “gritted it out.”
Katie Pelletier, also a junior, has now made it into the girls’ state tournament for three consecutive years. She shot a 93 during play Thursday.
As a freshman, she shot a 109 and last year carded a 100.
“Her improved short game and maturity has helped her take that next step forward,” said coach Savage.
Other individual scores for Caribou Thursday were turned in by Donovan Savage (92), Connor Thibeault (99), Tyler Dombroski (106) and Justin Ouellette (116).
Presque Isle shot a 354, with Hermon coming in with a 359 and John Bapst a 376. They were the three Class B teams earning berths into the team tourney, slated for Oct. 12, also at Natanis.
The low round of the day was turned in by Foxcroft Academy’s Colby Snell, who carded a 74.
