• The high school students have organized a foot ball club.
• Mrs. E. P. Grimes of this town gave a delightful entertainment in New Sweden Tuesday evening, as preliminary to starting a singing school there.
100 Years Ago-Oct. 9, 1913
• Handy harvest labor — The Fort Fairfield lockup has run quite an employment agency recently. The fellows in there nearly every night are willingly caught up in the morning by some farmers anxious to get them for potato picking. The farmers pay their fines and take the men into their fields.
• Woodland news — The electric road leading to Caribou throught the south part of Woodland is a great convenience to the people of that vicinity. Prof. Ness with his trained ponies visited Woodland Center last Friday. There are about 20 automobiles owned in Woodland.
75 Years Ago-Oct. 13, 1938
• Not an epidemic — Health Officer Chester S. Kingsley makes following statement: There is no epidemic of any kind going on in Caribou. There are several cases of sore throat as there always are at this time of year. At the present time we have one case of laryngeal diphtheria, which is the same as membranous croup, and have lost two children with septic sore throat, something entirely different than diphtheria.
• Of local interest — This week and next week are donation weeks at the Cary Memorial Hospital, so don’t forget to do your share in contributing preserves, vegetables, etc. Miss Virginia Osborne has accepted a teaching position in Woodland for the coming year. Levi Gulliver and Mrs. Jessie Wark of Fort Fairfield, and Mr. and Mrs. Warrie Gray and daughter, Faye, of Easton were calling on Mr. and Mrs. Ernest D. Bragdon on Sunday.

• Jet crash lands on Van Buren farm — If Capt. Raymond F. Girard, 35, of Plymouth, Mass., survives the crash landing of his F-106 Delta Dart interceptor Tuesday morning in a farm field near Van Buren, he will owe more than a little thanks for his life to the men of Detachment 41, Eastern Air Rescue Center, Loring Air Force Base. At 8:45 a.m., Capt. Girard of the 27th Fighter Interceptor Squadron crash landed his $3,310,000 jet on the property of Rudolph Blier 25 miles north of Loring and two miles west of Keegan.
• Kiwanis celebrates 6th year — The Caribou Kiwanis Club will observe the sixth anniversary of its charter with a special ceremony at its noon luncheon Monday at Hotel Caribou. The club received its charter Oct. 10, 1957. President that year was Bert Pratt, followed in the club’s top office by Norris Cianchette, Joseph G. Kelley Jr., Leonard Bero, Pete Beaulieu and Claude Cyr.

• Peacewalk planned — People from all walks of life in Aroostook County will come together to participate in what could be the largest peace issue-related event in Maine, to date, on Sunday, Oct. 16. Peacewalk ’88 is a partnership project of the Maine Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign and the Maine Coalition for Peace and Justice in Central America. There will be 13 simultaneous walks throughout the state. Aroostook Peace Action Coalition and Veterans for Peace are planning on participating in the 1 p.m. walk at Riverside Park.
• Guerrette receives Legion award— Roberta Guerrette of Caribou was recently honored with a national American Legion award presented at the fall conference at Calais. The award recognizes her outstanding efforts for raising the largest amount of funds for scholarships based on membership in the eastern division during 1987-88.
