University of Maine at Presque Isle holds 2009 athletic awards

    Culminating the evening was Erica Davis, (North Yarmouth, ME) gaining the prestigious Female Athlete of the Year honor and Tyler Delaney, (Truro, NS) achieving the Male Athlete of the Year.

    Individual awards went to Delaney as the Athletic Training Rising Star and David deKay, (Hiram, ME) as the Athletic Training Student of the Year. Women’s basketball named Kathleen Kilfoil (Johnville, NB) the Ruel Parks Coaches Award winner. The Al Arman (Make a Difference) Awards went to Megan Korhonen, (Littleton, ME) and Benjamim Rosser, (Caribou, ME) while the Stanley H. Small Coaches Award was presented to deKay.

    2008-09 Rookie of the Year awards went to: men’s cross country running, Kyle Batchelder, (Howland, ME); women’s cross country running, Kimberly Grant, (Crystal, ME); men’s golf, Brett Hooper, (St. Stephen, NB); men’s soccer, Craig Maffei, (Readfield, ME); women’s soccer, Jacquelyn Raymond, (Ashland, ME); women’s volleyball, Johannah Bubar, (Riverview, NB); men’s basketball, Rosser; women’s basketball, Emily Moore, (Lisbon, ME); women’s cross country skiing, Heather Dionne, (St. David, ME); men’s baseball, Tyson Tash, (Chester, ME).
    Members of the Owls baseball and softball teams earned NCAA Division III All-Independent Conference Honors. Earning AD3I softball honors are the following UMPI athletes. First team: Second Base, Kathleen Higgins, Freshman (Cole Harbour, NS); Third Base, Desiree Smith, Freshman (Thomaston, ME); Outfield, E. Davis, Junior (North Yarmouth, ME)]; Utility, Danielle Humphrey, Sophomore (New Gloucester, ME). Second Team: Shortstop, Brittany Humphrey, Sophomore (New Gloucester, ME); Pitcher, E. Moore, Freshman (Lisbon, ME), Pitcher, Nicole Russell, Junior (Newcastle, ME).
    Earning AD3I baseball honors are the following UMPI athletes. First team: Second base, Delaney, Junior (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada); Utility, Corey Harding, Sophomore (Plymouth, ME). Second team: Pitcher, Harding; Third Base, A.J. Pennartz, Junior (Birch Harbor, ME)
    The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 NCAA Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.
    It will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year.
