Ten eager area residents, including Bob Sprague, Michele Smith, Carol Pierson, Sharon Boulris, John and James Kavin, Susan Maynard, Milford Maynard, Carolyn Hanlon and Terry Hanlon, as well as guide Neal Sleeper, joined the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department’s Take It Outside Adult Series for a trip into the North Maine Woods.
The outing departed from the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center on Saturday morning, Sept. 14, and arrived at Macannamac Camps on Spider Lake. That afternoon the group had an appointment with Allagash Wilderness Waterway Ranger Kevin Brown at Churchill Dam. Brown toured the group around the area attractions at the dam, including the museum, boarding house, dam and fishway. He also answered a variety of different questions for the participants pertaining to the history of the area as well as artifacts that were observed in the museum.
The following day, participants awoke early, packed their bags, loaded the van and headed to Eagle Lake, where they hiked into the locomotives on Eagle Lake. After exploring the locomotives, participants walked the approximately 6/10th of a mile portage to Chamberlain Lake, where they were able to observe the inner working of the tramway and the recently-renovated section of it.
