    At the USCAA Cross Country National Championships held in Syracuse, N.Y. Saturday, UMPI senior Kayla Legassie finishes fifth with a time of 24:39.3 in the 6K event.
    Legassie, from Presque Isle, came in seventh in last year’s national event.
    The race winner was freshman Elaine Lowe of Cleary University, clocking a time of 23:07.6. 
    In the men’s race, Owl senior Philip Boody of New Sweden placed 42nd with a time of 30:39.2 on the 8K course. Sophomore Corey Hebert was 56th in 31:09.5 and sophomore Jesse Sandstrom claimed the 123rd slot, out of 183 participants, at 34:27.6.

 


Volleyball team blanked

     The Great Southern Athletic Conference volleyball quarterfinals were held recently, with UMPI losing to Agnes Scott College of Decatur, Ga., 3-0, in a match held Friday in Salem, N.C.
    The match scores were 25-20, 25-10 and 25-12. Agnes Scott went on to win the tournament and advance to the national tournament which begins this Friday.
    Three Owl players gained post-season honors in the conference. Shannon Brown made the all-conference team, while Abby Jewett earned a berth on the all-freshmen team. Molly Lindsey claimed the sportsmanship award and Shaina Hood, Randi Kaplan, Katie Patenaude and Lindsey all received All-GSAC academic awards.


 

Owl women fall to Mills College

    Coach Trevor Parent’s UMPI women’s soccer team was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Great South Athletic Conference playoffs, falling Friday to Mills College of Oakland, Calif., 5-1.
    Nicole Cyr scored the lone goal for UMPI. It came unassisted 6:55 into the match to give the Owls the early lead. Mills then tallied five unanswered goals to advance.
    Amanda Larrabee had six saves in goal for the Owls, who outshot their opponents, 15-13, in the match played in Salem, N.C.
