NEW SWEDEN — During their Nov. 13 regular meeting, selectmen hired Paul Edgecomb as a new public works employee for the town. Selectmen learned that with the snowfall taking place earlier in the week, it was necessary for the road department to use sand due to the packed down snow on the roads.
The current warrants, covering the time span of Oct. 27 to Nov. 9 and totaling $21,187.60, were approved. Selectmen also approved the Oct. 31 bank statement which showed a balance of $521,109.
On Friday, Dec. 13, the New Sweden School will be holding their traditional Santa Lucia celebration. There will be a Swedish meatball supper at 5 p.m. followed by classroom music at 6:30 and the official Santa Lucia Celebration afterwards. The school/community celebration involves eighth-grade students while the first- and second-graders will also play a part in it this year. All are welcome to attend.
“What amazes me most each year is that the tradition is so strong that all the students want to be involved,” Laurie Spooner, a teacher in the New Sweden school district, said.
It is a tradition, she said, that is worth taking the time to learn about. The holiday celebration will also include history of the tradition and what Santa Lucia means and why it is celebrated.
The next New Sweden Board of Selectmen meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the town office.
