LIMESTONE — For the first time in 19 years, a Limestone sports team has been named the recipient of the Maine Principals’ Association Good Sportsmanship Award.
The honor was bestowed upon the Eagle boys’ soccer team, which traveled to Hampden Nov. 9 to receive the banner.
Athletic administrator Travis Barnes said the award is a prestigious one, especially now that the MPA now utilizes a voting procedure that allows coaches and athletes the opportunity to select the deserving team.
“There is no greater honor than being recognized by your peers, especially when you are competing against them,” Barnes said.
“Coach [Jon] Hamilton and the boys’ soccer team have made it a priority to compete to the best of their abilities while always maintaining their integrity during each contest,” he added.
Hamilton said he “pushed his players” at the beginning of the season to play hard, but to be respectful toward others.
“I am proud of the boys. They conducted themselves [well] and maintained a positive attitude through the ups and downs of the season,” he said. “Having good character is the stepping stone of creating a successful program.
“The boys were so excited that they were part of bringing a banner to the Limestone gymnasium, something that hasn’t happened for awhile. I believe the attitude and sportsmanship will be contagious in other sports here in Limestone.”
One of the team’s seniors, Chris Bernier, said the honor meant a great deal to him and his teammates.
“It’s a great accomplishment for the school and it feels good to put a banner on the wall my senior year. We are all very thankful for the award,” he said.
“In my opinion, it’s the best award you can receive.”
