Bird feeding workshop this Saturday

LIMESTONE — With recent frigid temperatures, the right type of wintertime food can make a tremendous difference for birds and other wildlife dealing with cold and snow. For those who wish to learn how to attract birds to home feeders, a free workshop titled Winter Bird Feeding will be offered at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A slide presentation is scheduled in the morning, with hands-on construction of pinecone and suet feeders taking place throughout the day.
Members of Friends of Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge will host the event cooperatively with the Aroostook Birders bird-watching club, providing an overview of tried and true approaches to attracting northern Maine species. Participants will learn how to locate feeders, best foods, which feeder types work for specific birds, and how to make a simple feeder to take home with them.
All with an interest are invited to take part, and families especially are encouraged to attend.
The Aroostook NWR is located on the former Loring Air Force Base. From Caribou, take Route 89 toward Limestone, make a left turn onto the Loring Commerce Road (near Cote’s Auto) and proceed approximately two miles with the Visitors’ Center on the right.
For further information, call Aroostook NWR at 328-4634. In the event of severe weather, visit AroostookBirders.com for notice of cancellation.
