Savage named Big East Conference basketball first-teamer

The Big East Basketball Conference handed out its post-season awards during the league’s senior all-star games, held March 1 at Old Town High School.
Junior guard Hannah Graham of Presque Isle was named girls’ Player of the Year in the conference. Graham led the league in scoring at 17.7 points per game, was tops in assists at 4.5 per game, was sixth in three-point field goal percentage at 33.3, was fifth in steals at 3.1 per game and was fourth in free throw percentage at 67.5. She helped lead the Wildcats to an 18-0 regular season record and a berth in the Eastern Maine Class B championship game.    Jeff Hudson was recognized as Coach of the Year.
Joining Graham on the all-conference first team are teammate Krystal Kingsbury, along with Bre Skolfield of Foxcroft Academy and Hannah Shaw and Kelsey Shaw, both of Mount Desert Island.
Making the second team was Foxcroft’s Mackenzie Coiley, along with Morgan Card of Ellsworth, Maegan True of John Bapst, Sarah Phelps of MDI and Jenna Crouse of Hermon.
Earning honorable mention are Lauren Martin of Old Town, Claire Peterson of Hermon, Sierra Tapley of MDI and Emily Berry of Ellsworth.
For the boys, Dayne Savage and Cody Herbert of the Caribou Vikings claimed spots on the first team, along with Tyler Thayer of Hermon, Jon Phelps of MDI and Hunter Smith of Foxcroft.
The second team consists of Brad Shields of the Presque Isle Wildcats, Steve Mahon of Ellsworth, Adam Richardson and Eric Hoogterp, both of Old Town; and Andrew Davis of MDI.
Derek Richardson of Caribou made honorable mention along with Garvey Melmed of Old Town.
Justin Norwood of MDI was the boys’ Coach of the Year.
Local Scholar-Athlete winners were Delaney Williams of Caribou and Taylor Williams of Presque Isle for girls and Donovan Savage of Caribou and Josh Gordon of Presque Isle for boys.
The Paul Soucy Spirit Award went to Allisa Irving of Caribou and PI’s Kingsbury for girls and Adam Collins of Caribou and Drew Bates of Presque Isle for boys.
Defensive Award winners were Shyanne Barnes of Caribou and Kaleigh Kinney of Presque Isle on the girls’ side and Kameron Manter of Caribou and Cody Lyford of Presque Isle for boys.
The girls selected to play in the senior all-star game were Delaney Williams, Barnes and Irving, all of Caribou; Morgan Card of Ellsworth; Coiley, Brittany Dyer and Amber Anderson, all of Foxcroft; Crouse of Hermon; Karrie O’Donnell and Courtney Benson, both of John Bapst; Hannah Shaw and Sierra Myrick, both of MDI; Kate Rawson of Old Town and Kinney of Presque Isle.
Hudson and Brent Barker of MDI coached the teams.
The boys’ senior all-stars were Richardson, Herbert, Matt Milliard and Manter, all of Caribou; Mahon of Ellsworth; Kolby Kendall, Hunter Law and Sam Keane, all of Foxcroft; Thayer of Hermon; Colby Kohn and Sam Brown, both of John Bapst; Phelps, Davis and Abe Philbrook, all of MDI; Melmed, Nick Cowan and Zack Bartlett, all of Old Town; and Shields, Lyford and Bates, all of Presque Isle.
Norwood and Caribou’s Chris Casavant were the coaches.
In other end-of-the-season girls’ statistics, Kingsbury finished third in the league in scoring at 15.5 points per game. Taylor Williams of Presque Isle was second in assists at 3.2 per game, Emily Lagerstrom of the Wildcats was second in three-point field goal percentage at 37.2 and Taylor Williams was fourth at 36.4.
Caribou’s Barnes was sixth in rebounding at 7.6 per game.
On the boys’ side, Savage was fifth in scoring at 14.9 points per game. Lyford was fourth in assists at 3.2 per game and Savage was fifth at 3.0, while Shields was second in rebounds at 7.7 and Herbert was third at 7.3.
Dayne Savage was tops in three-point field goal percentage at 44.3 and Donovan Savage of the Vikes was third at 42.9. Dayne Savage placed third in free throw percentage at 78.9 and Presque Isle’s Saul Nunez was fourth at 77.5. Caribou’s Richardson was fifth in two-point field goal percentage at 51.5.
