The lake

Like most kids our memories seem to begin around age four or five. I remember being in preschool and my dad taking me ice  fishing at square lake.  He would get my sister and I dressed up in our snow suits and so many layers that we walked around like marshmallow men.  There began my first memories at square lake!

Year after year we would go up to square and when I turned 10 my mom and dad bought a camp there.  Man the fun was only just beginning!  Camp has always been a place to relax, enjoy nature, and well…….let’s just safely say…. be a good place to make a few funny stories
Now just so you know….. some stories I have been sworn to secrecy.. so , since I am a man of my word, I  won’t let my dad down!  I now understand being a bit older what that sign above the camp door means “what happens at camp stays at camp”.
There have been a few times that I have gotten myself in trouble at camp!  Hard to believe I know!  See we keep a book at camp. Each time we are there we write about our time at camp. You know the usual stuff, like who was there, what we did, blah blah blah…..anyways, that weekend it was just me and dad so like always dad told me to write in the book so I did.  When mom came the next weekend I guess she didn’t appreciate the part I  wrote about squeal hunting expedition.
The following summer was a profound summer.  It was he year I learned to water ski. I had the best teacher ever!  The instruction was world class!,,  it went something like this.
1. Jump in the water    Okay easy!
2. Now put you feet in these skis.  Okay. Not quite as easy as it sounds or looks but okay done!
3. Now hold this rope and don’t let go no matter what.
Now,  I have to say when you are 10 in the middle of an 8000 acre lake, in water that is 120 feet deep, and kinda cold,  It might seem just a little intimidating.  But, then, when you hear your dad put the ski boat, in gear, and you know what is about to happen next…..the rest was MINOR!   I learned quick!
Tubing is a whole other adventure.  Most of you may think of tubing as the activity where you have a floating tube behind the boat and ride along.  At camp our version of tubing is pulling the float fast with and end result of sinking it!   Yes the object is to sink the float while my dad drives the boat like a maniac. What fun!
So many memories at camp.  Each season and year brings new adventures.  Opportunities too!   I remember this year the first day of our families summer vacation. We were headed to the lake.  Dad had to bring a piece of dock up and I was just begging to drive the four wheeler up!   My mom doesn’t like to go four wheeling much anymore but I talked her into going….maybe a little guilting  her too 🙂 we started out from the house with me in my four wheeler and mom and maren on the other.  The ride was great!  Awesome day!   Did I mention how great it is at our game wardens are so visible and protect and serve.  Yup that’s right!  Visible!  Visible right in back of me with the lights and sirens on. Luckily I was prepared to handle this.  I said yes sir when he asked for the registration.  Things were going well. Several yes sirs and then a lot of no sirs. No sir I’m not 16. No sir I haven’t had an atv safety class no sir I’m not on my own land. No sir I haven had a hunter safety course.  My mom was about to have a cow!!!  She was gonna kill my dad later I just knew it!  We made it to camp and the week was great!  Oh, I also took my atv safety course this fall. Check, another yes sir I can add for next time!
