Spring brings positive signs

Ah! Spring is in the air! I smelled it for the first time last Friday and this past weekend, I saw my first robin. And the geese are back. And so are the flies. Oh well, you take the bad with the good. But as good as the snowy season might have been for the area economy; it sure is good to see the signs of spring!
And of course, the spring means the annual City-Wide Yard Sale. Placements on the map have been selling regularly, but we don’t want anyone to miss out. Remember, the sale is Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18 and the sign-up period ends on April 26. The office here will be open this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for those who have difficulty getting here during the week. And the same will be said for the 26th as that will be the last chance before the map goes to the printer.

Thursday, May 8th is the date for our Annual Recognition Dinner. The Chamber board will look at nominees this week so names can go on invitations going out next week. More on the dinner will be in next week’s column.
The Maine Winter Sports Center is in fund-raising mode and they have a standing offer of $400,000 if donations can match that amount. In other words, it is a matching donation. MWSC has been instrumental in our area for Nordic skiing and other activities which has improved the health of our local children and adults and has even led to a County legacy in the Olympics! Please consider a donation, which of course, is tax deductible.
I have two other announcements for you. First, the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Corporation will raise 30 flags on Monday, May 12 at 11 a.m. to honor deceased veterans. If you are a family member or friend of a deceased veteran and would like to raise a flag to honor the memory of that deceased veteran, call Harry Hafford at 435-6024. Once the flags are raised, they will fly through Veterans Day in memory.
The Veterans Memorial Park Association will present Music Fest at the Caribou Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 17 from 6-9 p.m. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Enjoy a night of music with gospel, country, bluegrass and more. Come out and hear great music while supporting a great cause. For more information, call Doug at 493-4476.
Oh! One more! Caribou Friends for Scouts will be sponsoring a Teen Dance/Black Light Party Friday, May 2nd at their meeting hall at 71 Aldrich Drive behind the Pines Health building in Caribou. Admission $5/person. Grades 6-8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and grades 9-12 from 9-11:30 p.m. Open to all students. All proceeds to benefit the meeting hall operational expenses. Drinks, snacks, and glow sticks will be available. For more information please call 551-4098 or email cariboufriendsforscouts@gmail.com.
Happy spring, everyone and I hope this finds you singing a robin’s song.
