Stedt, Maxine L., 81, April 30, 2014. A celebration of her life will be held in the summer. Arrangements by Mockler Funeral Home, Caribou.
CARIBOU – Maxine Louise Stedt, daughter of Leonard and Sadie (Conley) Beaulier, died unexpectedly with family by her side on Tuesday, April 30. She was born in Washburn, ME, on August 16, 1932, the seventh child of nine children.
Maxine married Maynard Stedt in 1949 and, until his death in 1987, they enjoyed 36 years together at their home in Woodland and at their camp at Little Madawaska Lake. Her greatest joy in life was preparing a home-cooked meal for her family and attending gatherings with extended family and friends, especially when it included a round or two of cards. She was well known for her old-fashioned molasses cookies, chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, and fried chicken. Many people were challenged to duplicate the recipes that were written on her heart and measured in her well-worn tiny hands.
Maxine was educated in Washburn schools and worked at home caring for her sons and on the Stedt family farm in the early years of her marriage. She later was employed by McCains in Washburn, and Elcon and Mecon in Caribou. Maxine cherished the friendships she made with schoolmates and co-workers and especially enjoyed her Wednesday afternoon card group. She felt fortunate that she was able to experience two trips to Alaska, along with several trips to Texas, Florida, California, and Las Vegas.
Besides her parents and husband, Maxine was predeceased by her brother Clarence; six sisters, Hazel, Jeanette, Eunice, Della, Clairbelle, and Josephine; as well as a long-time companion Donald (Ike) Tompkins of Kittery. She is survived by a sister, Winifred Pate and family of Anchorage, AL; three sons and their families, Michael and Irma Stedt, Joseph and Josebeth of El Paso, TX; Robert and Susan Stedt of New Sweden, Jason of Fort Kent, Kelly and Amber of New Sweden, Lea and Justin of Caribou; Jerry and Elaine Stedt of Topsham, Jessica and Tim of Auburn and Jeri Rene of Watertown, MA; five great-grandchildren: Coty, Sara, Logan, Amos, and Benjamin; dear friends Nancy and Lewis Leavitt and family of Caribou; sister-in-law, Judy Stedt of Woodland; brother-in-law, Herman Carmen of Wade as well as many nieces and nephews.
Maxine loved summer and asked that family and friends celebrate her life at a later date when the sunshine is warm, the grass is green, the trees are shady, and the flowers are fragrant and plentiful. Maxine expressed her gratitude and her family are thankful for the care and consideration provided by the staff of Cary Medical Center in Caribou. They have requested that those who wish may make contributions in her name to the Jefferson Cary Foundation. Arrangements by the Mockler Funeral Home. www.mocklerfuneralhome .com
