Wow! That was a fun weekend! There was the City-Wide Yard Sale and other than the rain on Sunday, there were plenty of cars on the streets! There was the concert at CPAC. There was another concert the day before. There was the dinner at the Caribou Country Club. It was exciting!
And this coming weekend is Memorial Day weekend. As I have probably mentioned before, Memorial Day means a lot to me because my dad was a hero in World War II. And it has saddened me a bit to see the Memorial Day parade around here become a little tired. We are working on the parade being much more fitting a reminder and a celebration of our heroes this year.
I have been working with the organizer for the Caribou American Legion and he has been terrific in his planning and going after participation. It’s going to be a longer and better parade. But, you know what? We need bands! If your school or organization has a band that can march or ride in the parade, please let me know so that we can add to our parade.
If you would like to march, please go to our website at cariboumaine.net and click Popular Forms. There is the registration form to march in the parade. Fill it out and get it back to me as soon as possible as the time is getting short.
Let’s honor our heroes with a good parade and a good turnout to see it happen.
The Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery is also having their annual ceremony up at the cemetery which begins at 1 o’clock on Memorial Day. That is always a moving service and you would be glad you went.
This area is going to be hopping this summer. Our first Thursdays on Sweden event will be June 12 and wow, the plans we have made! It’s the 50th anniversary of Spud Speedway and there will be a parade of race cars beginning at Skyway at 5:45. There will be a pit crew competition downtown with four divisions. I hear the General Lee (from Dukes of Hazzard fame) will have a replica here. There will be go-cart demonstrations and pedal car races. All of that besides a great band, great food and lots of vendors.
And that is just the first one for the summer! So gear up for Thursdays on Sweden, or as Scott Susi has coined, “See you on Sweden Street!”
Spud Speedway is also having a fair to celebrate its anniversary that will run from July 7 through the 11th. More details on that will be forthcoming in future columns.
Don’t you love this new “can-do” feeling we are getting around here? I know I do.
