The Caribou tennis teams face a busy week, with four matches in consecutive days beginning with this afternoon’s road match at Houlton. After that, the Vikings are at home for competitions Thursday against Presque Isle, Friday against Madawaska and Saturday against Old Town.
The final match of the regular season is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27 at Presque Isle. The playoffs are scheduled to get under way with the preliminary round June 3.
The Vikings are hoping to be part of the post-season, and while the boys appear likely to advance, the girls have some work to do. In the current standings, the Caribou boys are in fifth place out of 17 teams with their 4-3 record, while the girls are in 13th with a 3-4 mark. Only the top 12 teams move on to the playoffs.
Caribou had just one match last week, playing at Fort Kent Thursday.
The Viking boys prevailed by a 3-2 score as they swept the singles matches against the Warriors. Brenden Cyr beat Lance Jandreau, 9-7, in first singles, while Michael Marquis was an 8-3 victor over Eric Deschenes in No. 2 singles and Ethan Plourde blanked Alex Paradis, 8-0, in third singles.
Caribou’s Austin Scott and Austin Cheplic fell to the Warriors’ Tito Naranja and Kamran Hussain in No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Dustin and Dylan Coty were edged by David Roy and Charles Parham in second doubles, 8-6.
The Viking girls were beaten by a score of 4-1. Salvaging Caribou’s lone win was the duo of Bria Judd and Conner Spencer, who handled Amelia Guimond and Sam Dubay, 8-3. In second doubles, Taylor Belanger and Brittany Dickinson of Caribou fell to Brooke Jandreau and Rudy Martin, 8-1.
The Warriors won all three singles matches, as Lauren Doak stopped Erin Patton, 8-3; Kelsey Pelletier doubled up on Mackayla Bouchard, 8-4; and Alexa Pelletier disposed of Clara Collins, 8-2.
The regional singles tournament took place Friday at Caribou High School. The event serves as a qualifier for the state singles tourney May 30 and 31 at Colby College in Waterville,
Caribou had two boys and one girl advance. Marquis won both his matches, 8-0 over Michael Wong of Madawaska and 6-0, 6-0 over Chris Carroll of Presque Isle. Cyr blanked Thomas Lajoie of Van Buren, 8-0, before topping Ian Lee of Madawaska, 6-2, 6-0. On the girls’ side, Patton scored an 8-5 victory over Jacinta Deschene of Van Buren before downing Presque Isle’s Blair Bailey, 6-3, 6-1.
Also competing for the Vikes were Plourde for the boys and Bouchard and Collins for the girls. Plourde and Collins were each able to win their first match before being eliminated in the following round.
