Thursdays on Sweden kick off June 12

The city of Caribou and the Caribou Area Chamber of Commerce will kick off the 2014 summer season with a bang Thursday, June 12, as they team up with Spud Speedway and the Ric Reese Band to bring music, food, vendors and fun back to downtown Caribou with Thursdays on Sweden St. Mark your calendar for this summer season’s fun.
June 12 will be “Boot Scoot Boogie Night” with the Ric Reese Band, one of Canada’s top country/western bands. Spud Speedway will have some hot items there that night to celebrate their 50th anniversary with rides for little racers and a pit crew challenge, so get your teams ready now. No parking will be available in the Post Office lot so vendors and visitors should keep that in mind.
Thursday, June 26, will be “Retro Night ’50s & ’60s” with Music Xpress. Twist, shout and knock yourself out, and come in costume — you might get something special. Hopefully we will have some classic cars and lots of street dancing.
July 17 will be “Beach Party Night” so forget the winter and come down and indulge in sun and sand. Wear your favorite fun-in-the-sun outfit and boogie to some great tunes. Not sure but maybe Guns and Hoses will have some tropical treats. Yes that’s right — Guns and Hoses — your local police, fire and ambulance volunteers who have worked hard all winter to improve their great concession.
Then on Thursday, July 31, stop by for “Pirate Night” with Sound Friendship. It will be an “Ahoy, mateys” night — yes, time to weigh anchor, hoist the mizzen, and set sail for Sweden St. Last year was awesome as folks really got into the theme, and there might be lots of trinkets for the crew’s booty bag.
Thursday, Aug. 14, will present a special treat in recognition of the World Acadian Congress with “Cajun Night” and an authentic Cajun band called La Recolte, live from Lafayette, Louisiana. Sweden Street will be filled with some great Cajun music so even if you don’t dance you will have happy feet that night.
Finally, Thursday, August 21, will wrap up the Sweden St. festivities with “Family & Friends Night” with French Toast, one of northern Maine’s favorite bands, who will be rocking the house that night.
Vendors are welcome, but are required to complete a registration form, which is available at the Parks and Recreation Department or the chamber, or from both entities’ websites. For more information, contact the recreation office at 493-4224 or the CACC at 498-6156.
