Checkpoints in Caribou this weekend
The Caribou Police Department, in conjunction with the Presque Isle Police Department and the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety’s 2014 “DriveSober, Maine” Impaired Driving Enforcement Campaign, will be conducting a safety checkpoint on Routes 1, 89 and 161 and Bennett Drive in Caribou this weekend.
The checkpoint will ensure all motor vehicles, drivers and passengers are in compliance with State of Maine laws and make sure the roads are safe for traveling motorists this holiday weekend. Officers will be checking for proper seatbelt use, inadequate exhaust and tires, violations of inspection and registration laws, sobriety and other safety related issues.

Grant to fund packs
North Lakes Fire & Rescue has received notification of award of a FEMA Fire Grant.
According to Chief Darren Woods, this grant will replace all of the air packs (SCBA) and masks that the department is currently using with up to date equipment and safety features.
“Without this funding, we would not have been able to offer our firefighters this increased level of protection for them that is needed to do the job safely.  Firefighting is inherently dangerous, we need to put our people first, and do everything we can to make sure they go home safe after the call.”
The total cost of this project is $130,840. The grant will pay for $124,298 and the department will pay the remaining $6,542.00.
