The regular season wraps up today, the final Heal Point standings will be released Thursday or Friday and the playoffs get underway early next week for varsity baseball and softball teams.
Although the weather has been sketchy throughout the spring, teams are close to getting all their games in and are now awaiting the post-season.
Teams in the area are doing particularly well — Limestone-MSSM in the Class D ranks and the Caribou baseball team in Class B.
It appears the Eagle softball team, under first-year coach Andrew Kirby, will place first in the division and draw a bye into the quarterfinal round.
The Eagles, undefeated entering its finale against Washburn yesterday, are just ahead of PVHS for the top spot. Ironically, Limestone-MSSM and PVHS met in last year’s title game.
“I feel as the season has progressed, the girls are starting to play their best softball,” Kirby said. “We are solid at every position on the field and have been strong both on offense and defense.”
The Eagles beat Madawaska, Southern Aroostook, Ashland and Hodgdon twice last week to move to 13-0.
The Limestone-MSSM boys have also had a strong season in baseball. The Eagles took a 7-6 record into the Washburn game and heading into the game were in fourth place in the division, just a slot behind the Beavers.
“We have an exceptionally dedicated and motivated group of players who reflect the strong leaderhip that our seniors provide,” said first-year coach Eric McGough. “I’ve watched the team steadily improve every game, and that is a testament to the character the players bring with them.”
Limestone-MSSM (7-6) did lose four of five last week, including being swept by Hodgdon in a Monday doubleheader.
The Caribou baseball team is also very much in the playoff picture. The Vikings, who close out the season today at home against Presque Isle, are in seventh place and a win over the Wildcats would solidify a top-eight finish and home field advantage in the preliminary round.
Caribou (9-6) defeated Houlton and split a doubleheader against MDI Saturday.
