Community College trustees OK $2 per credit hour tuition rate hike

AUGUSTA — The board of trustees of the Maine Community College System has authorized a $2 per-credit-hour increase in tuition at the state’s seven community colleges, bringing the credit-hour cost from $88 to $90, effective this fall.
As a result, tuition for a full-time, in-state student will increase by $60 next year, from $2,640 to $2,700. Even with the increase, tuition and fees will continue to be the lowest in New England and will remain at the national average.

“This is a modest increase, but one we wish we did not have to make,” said Robert Clark, chair of the MCCS board, in announcing the tuition rates. “State appropriations have remained flat in recent years, and the colleges have worked hard to live within very tight budgets. But as costs continue to rise, so does the challenge of maintaining a high quality, affordable education.”
