The Caribou Middle School baseball team laid claim to the Aroostook County championship May 29, topping Presque Isle, 3-1, to finish with the best record in the league.
PI jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Vikes scored all their runs in the top of the third, spearheaded by Noah Hixon’s two-run single into right field. Matt Nadeau added an RBI hit in the inning.
Spencer McDuffie pitched five solid innings to earn the pitching victory, while PI’s Jaren Winger fanned nine in his seven innings of work.
Caribou also recorded recent wins over Houlton (8-6) and Fort Fairfield (10-2), while falling to the Shires (4-1).
Bailey Griffeth had two hits and Camden Huck and Noah Frost combined on the pitching in the victory over Houlton. Defensive mistakes cost Caribou against the Shires in their other matchup, leading to three unearned runs. McDuffie and Frost did the pitching in that one.
Against Fort Fairfield, Huck went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, while Nadeau and Josh Quist added a pair of hits each. Four Caribou pitchers, including starter and winner Noah Rosado, combined to strike out 14 Tiger batters.
Caribou, coached by Kelly Page, boasted a .339 team batting average on the season. Hixon, the starting catcher, led the way with a .512 mark and 12 RBI. Quist, an outfielder, came in at .480 with eight RBI and Huck batted .438 while knocking in 11. The lefty also handled a bulk of the pitching responsibilities.
Nadeau, who played first base, was the team’s fourth .400-plus regular, finishing at .414 with a team-leading 14 RBI.
Bailey Griffeth, Frost and Brandon Manter all turned in solid campaigns, with each batting over .300.
Caleb Trombley, McDuffie (two pitching wins), Tyler Wright (0.00 earned run average on the mound), Alex Bouchard, Rosado (0.84 ERA), Evan Desmond (.400 batting average), Sebastian Marquis, Alex Ezzy (.353), Austin Findlen (.500), Hayden Hunter (.500) and Jacob Berkoski were the other players who contributed to the success of the team.
