• Ben Young started for Portland today to enlist in the regular army; George Trusty, Will Cayouette and Harry Rogers will start for the same place for the same purpose tomorrow.

• Going bareheaded is a fad among young women and Caribou has “caught on.”

100 Years Ago-July 30, 1914

• News from Washburn — The school in the Taber District taught by Miss Myrtle Umphrey closed last Friday and they enjoyed a picnic at Aroostook Valley Park. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Churchill have moved into their new house on Churchill Street. Jesse Lancaster, clerk in Phair’s store, is laid up for a while on account of a dislocation in the hip.

• Limestone ladies advised to buy locally — Ladies of Limestone or any other place be warned. Do not purchase so called linen in 20-yard pieces because you seem to be getting a bargain, as the linen will certainly prove to be cotton — Limestone correspondent. Pretty good advice in regard to purchasing all kinds of goods. Patronize your home merchants where goods are as represented and mistakes cheerfully rectified.

75 Years Ago-Aug. 3, 1939

• Aerial crop dusting in fourth season — With a second dusting plane arriving here at the end of this week, the Island Crop Dusting Co. at the airport swings into its fourth dusting season in Aroostook with calls for dusting coming in from this area (Caribou) and around Fort Kent.

• Newberry’s celebrates enlarged store — Marking a step forward in retail merchandising for the large area served by Caribou as a retain sales center, the new and enlarged J. J. Newberry Co. store on Sweden St. will open its doors formally tomorrow morning. Its fine new front is completely modernized with stainless steel, polished marble, modern display windows and a new 30 ft. luncheonette.

50 Years Ago-July 30, 1964

• Ultra modern post office facility — This week, Postmaster Atwood Anderson will soon oversee an ultra-modern Caribou post office facility. It features a loading platform that will accommodate the heaviest truck traffic, as well as a much larger and more attractive lobby and 160 more postal boxes for public convenience. The move from the temporary quarters in the American Legion Post to the new $400,000 building will take place this weekend and the Sweden Street entrance will be opened 1 p.m. Monday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

• Caribou host to doubles tennis tourney — Today, Caribou is hosting the Aroostook County Doubles Tourney in Presque Isle. Representing Caribou will be: 12-12 boys, Corey Theriault and Matt Hunter; 10-12 girls, Jen Hunter and Lise Carter, Christine Solman and Chelsea Belanger; 13-15 boys, Brian Hunter and Pat Benett, Corey Lundell and Chris Davidson, Troy Caverhill and Eric Salminen; Mick Saucier and Chris Lundell; 13-15 girls, Anne Bernard and Tiffany Pelletier, and 16-18 Jason Ouellette and Joey Bernard; 16-18 girls, Kellie Leeman and Amy Rolfe.
