CARIBOU, Maine — The Bessie Gray Memorial United Methodist Church of Caribou will be hosting their annual chicken barbecue at the church located on the corner of Prospect and Sweden Streets beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2.
The chicken barbecue has become an annual Caribou summertime tradition. Put on by members of the 101-year-old Methodist church, the event has been held for over 25 years.
Last summer, the enormous grill used to prepare the chicken underwent a major overhaul completed by welding students and instructors at the Caribou Regional Technology Center. The refurbished grill is ready to be fired up again this year and the congregation’s grill masters are looking forward to serving up their legendary fare yet again.
“Our barbecue sauce is created from a 50-year-old recipe,” said event co-chair Bob Thompson. “In addition, we have our own secret recipe for potato salad and coleslaw, which we make from scratch, and we also slow cook the beans the night before.”
The feast includes one-half of a chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, rolls, fruit cobbler and a variety of drinks.
A full dinner costs $12, and there is also the option available of getting chicken and a roll for $7. Customers may pick up the dinners to go or they may be enjoyed right at the church.
“A picnic area will be all set up to sit and eat, or if you have a crazy schedule, we will gladly accommodate you with a take-out meal,” Thompson confirmed. “Come join us this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thank you for your support!”
